Tennis prodigy Emma Raducanu has faced criticism for her “mind-blowing” playing agenda, as experts caution she’s encumbered by an excessive entourage.
The 21 year old phenom had to bow out of her quarter-final bout with Daria Kasatkina due to a sprained ligament in her left foot this past weekend.
Blasting onto the scene at just 18, Raducanu captured hearts and headlines alike by securing the US Open title in 2021. Despite that monumental win at Flushing Meadows, Raducanu’s subsequent career trajectory has been marred by persistent fitness woes.
Choosing to skip the clay court action at the French Open, Raducanu made a notable appearance up to Wimbledon’s fourth round this summer, only to face an early exit during her US Open title defense.
The British tennis sensation, who has seen a revolving door of coaches since her rise to fame, has limited her tournament participation, appearing in a mere 13 since the start of the year, a strategy raising eyebrows among the tennis elite.
Kieron Vorster, a famed strength and conditioning coach who has worked with the likes of Tim Henman and Dan Evans, didn’t mince words when speaking with the Daily Mail about Raducanu’s career management: “She just doesn’t play enough matches,” lamenting her reduced clay court season and consequent lack of preparation.
“Then she was hurt against Lulu Sun in the round of 16 at Wimbledon, then plays one hard court event, goes to the US Open undercooked and loses first round.”
“I think there could potentially be a lot of ‘yes’ people around her, instead of people telling her what she doesn’t want to hear, ‘You know what, Emma, you need to get out there and play’.
“She’s a good player. That’s not the issue. But this abbreviated schedule is just mind-blowing.

“There’s too many people around her. She’s got a guy from IMG (the agency who represent her) travelling with her every single week. The tennis world’s gone crazy – gone are the days where you just have your coach and your physical trainer.”
After Raducanu withdrew from her match against Kasatkina following a tough first set, Kasatkina expressed her sentiments: “First of all, I feel sorry for Emma for retiring during the match. It’s a pity to get injured, especially in the deeper stages on the tournament. I wish her a speedy recovery to get ready for the next tournament.”
